The Quicktime of Roy Disney's speech that I uploaded to the Guild website on Wednesday night was corrupted -- it actually only played the first half of the clip. [Eek!] [Embarrassed]

I finally have it straightened out (I hope!) and so you can now go to our party photo page and get the full clip of the last 25 seconds of the speech, up to and including "it ain't over yet ..."

PS This is a long upload for a dial-up connection, so there's a link to download the clip and play it offline if you prefer.

"I'm having trouble right click saving the quicktime."

You should be able to go into your Temporary Internet Folder, (if you use IE) and find the quicktime. Sort by size or date, and copy it to your harddrive.

Hey, the quote option doesn't show up anymore!!!

Kevin, one of these days at one of these animator shindigs you'll glance up to see people fleeing for dear life from a guy who looks like 'Shan Yu' from Disney's 'Mulan' and then you'll hear:

" Haul ass! It's Greg B!!! "

Wow! Until I saw that video of Disney speakin' his piece I thought the whole Disney-Eisner thing was mularky.

Yet you can tell by his manner and delivery that he means BINNESS ( slang for business )

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

I don't know the guy, he seems sweet and everything but that video says nothing...sorry...I wonder if he knows why the people are supporting him...I wonder if everyones on the same page...or I wonder if everyone is gonna continue to be vague about it cuz being specific might crush all hope...Hey, I gonna keep doin what i got to do to stay alive out here in this city while remaining creative and try to always love what I do...but, unless theres some book I missed on Roys agendas, I just don't see what A disney at the helm of Disney is gonna do for the unemployed and inflated corporate ego bonuses that mismanage our local community so much...so he hates to see the low mroal in the office...what does he have planned to change that?

I dunno, its all good. I guess if I expect the usual maybe I might be pleasently surprised...its all political right now, all talk with no real focus..I guess its secret like GregB, we have to wait for it to happen before we can talk about it...then...what I dunno

just my continued 2 cent contribution

From Snake: "I wonder if he knows why the people are supporting him....but, unless theres some book I missed on Roys agendas, I just don't see what A disney at the helm of Disney is gonna do for the unemployed and inflated corporate ego bonuses that mismanage our local community so much..."

You can be sure he knows why people are supporting him. The problem is that some in our community don't know why they should be supporting him. Fact is, Roy's consistently been a voice in favor of Disney staying true to their roots, and he's been especially protective of the feature animation legacy his father and uncle created.

Of course he's vague now. He's launching into a business war. Will he win? Will he see it through? Will all this ultimately benefit the animation community? I don't know, I do know that Roy has been someone who has stood up to be counted before, and because of that he has my support.

Doesn't mean I'm going to sit on my hands and wait to see what he accomplishes -- but then, no one has ever suggested that that was a reasonable course of action. [Wink]

What does staying true to family roots mean in this case? Im not tryin to make anyone out to be a bad guy, but theres certain things you DON'T have to be vague about in order to get people on the same page. Does stayin "true" mean producing quality animation, cuz thats relative and vague as hell, or does it mean
to continue to use the local talent like in the beginning to produce quality animation. Corporate war will need soldiers and I would hate to see good soldiers lost to find weapons of mass destruction...if you catch my drift.

But like I said Im still goin fight the fight thats already in progress and if my bruthas and sistas say support Roy, so be it, no skin off my nutt sack. I just haven't heard anything that convinces me that he's fighting for us local boys and girls. Just HIS name and empire.

Ya Know, I wrote the same thing to Stanley Gold, Snakebite. It's hard to give concrete support unless you know what they need help with.
The website is very vague... but maybe it needs to be so as not to tip off Eisner.

You can say that again Snakebite!

This board and it's members have at least stepped up to the plate on numerous occasions and spoken their piece.

I know I've sent Roy's 'savedisney.com' site link to all my news service pals. He probably got more hits than a bow legged blonde at a cowboy kickin' contest.

Even though I don't fit in with his agenda, I never fit in with the animation community, but I love animation and have friends who work in the field.

Charles Z has been man enough to take point more than his fair share and I respect his leadership enough to put aside my differences and follow him on this. In the battle he says support Roy. So for now Roy has my support.

Snakebite is right. This is a tough town to live in. I've never seen a city like LA. Soon as you make more money, sooner somehow the govt. figures a way to work it outta you. Soon as you think your job's secure, you let some goofball come along and louse things up.

I'm glad I stayed on the outside. It's bad enough lookin' at friends who's dream it was to work for animation studios now having to go home. Marriages and friendships breakin' up because we let some suits get outta hand and not school the unwary public.

Maybe Roy's an example of what happens when you wait too long or pick the wrong employees. It turned around and bit him in the ass.

But if he's gonna stand up with the troops he can speak to em' so I says he should post a 'howdy do' to AN.

I've been in many, many a battle and I'm worn. Sometimes all I wanna do is just call it a day and just work at a studio, get regular check and shut up. But I ain't that way. Never been.

So I'm one for doin' what I gotta do to maintain. I ain't worried bout death cause I know for sure I'm immortal. Only I goof things up for me when I ain't bein' responsible enough. That responsibility comes from choices 'I' make. For the good of myself and for others.

At least Disney showed up at the party. At least he got on stage and spoke his piece. Now let's see if he keeps his word and recognizes the skillz of AN.

I worked at the Mouse House when Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg rode in.

At that time (the mid '80s) Mr. E. and Mr. K. were two live action execs from Paramount who knew little about animation and whose first impulse was to shut it down and focus on live action. Rumors swirled that we were all soon to be laid off.

Roy made reference to the fact that Disney's animation division was kept in operation "twenty years ago" and needs help now.

Whatever else you may think of Roy's present efforts, keep in mind that he was instrumental in keeping Disney animation rolling back in the middle '80s, when it was in danger of being closed down or shipped overseas.

Steve glad you brought that up.

Yet what puzzles me is if Eisner and Katzenburg were so anti-animation, how did they get hired in the first place???

Didn't someone at The Big D ask them BEFORE they signed contracts and dished out the shmooze prizes?

Why was it such a suprise that these two wanted to squash the animation division?

Either someone wasn't watching the barn door or something is shakey here.

hey wait a minute...didn't animation eventually get sent overseas? the 80's were twenty years ago, Steve. The majority of the work is now overseas. How can this one man change the mind of million dollar bonuses that pursuade these shows to leave our community?

His good deeds are in the past, and as much as they are still valid most people don't know those deeds (since they weren't there) and bringing them up shows nothing for this new potential future...it could imply a future which makes everyone ASS-U-ME but you know what happesn when you assume...

He needs to chat with the new soldiers. Im not tryin to discredit the brutha, I just think he needs to step up his game. He owes it the community...and yes I said "owe" cuz he does.
As long as he makes a buck on the name of Disney, he owes the artists for they are the ones who made his empire/name powerful.

I don't think its too much to ask him to explain his agenda. Im like GRegB, studio life doesn't always work for me, and Im glad it didn't cuz eventially I'd be on my ass with the rest of the animation community. I've struggled but at least Im still here while my bruthas and sistas with "stable" gigs are sht out of luck...and like GregB I too have fought many battles, alot of times for people that were not worth it....and until Roy can be a lil more specific Im not sure he's worth it either.

But I will support the people I have grown to respect and again, if they say Roy is worth it so be it....but Im still gonna ask the guy to expain himself.

is that wrong?

Snakebite speaks with Klingon Honor!!!

AN is where the troops are. Roy should make like King Arthur and wander amongst us.

But I have a feeling he's been here already.

Maybe AN needs a "Meet The Animation Professionals" forum where Charles or oneo his staff can interview the professionals and up and commers like any other news/magazine venue.

It' not like this board is short on exceptionally talented members!

My understanding is that Eisner and Wells were brought in to control ALL of Disney. At this time animation was a only small part of it.
It was Wells (the real man in charge) who determined animation was a worthless venture. He felt (my understanding) is that they could make just as much from reissues as they could from new releases w/o the humongus cost of 25mil to make these films.
They only kept features alive (again my understanding) to keep Roy occupied. It wasn't until JK recognized the value and potential of the animated features that they became the juggernaut that we now know. This stopped Wells from ending animation.
Eisner's big idea for a film was "Doofus, the police dog". So, thankfully, it became Jeffrey's child. I don't believe Roy actually had much to do with the actual running of the animation dept.(once again, my understanding).

Look, the way I feel about is this:

Eisner and Disney both know full well what's happening on this forum. I'm sure they've been asked umpteen times to stop by and chat.

So I say this:

The first one of them, either Eisner or Disney that comes to this board and says hello to clear up the air is the good guy.

I'll be sitting like a gargoyle waiting.

I'd say the fallacy of all this "we are the troops" talk is that we are over-estimating our own importance as artists.

Now before you all get out the torches and pitchforks, think about it from the view of a corporate shareholder. They don't care about much of anything except their stock value. They don't give two shts about the art of animation in the same way that you don't care about the art of making computers if you buy some IBM stock.

The Revolution is up to US, not Roy Disney or Michael Eisner. We fight that battle one day at a time.

Let's not hold our breath waiting for Roy to "mingle with the commoners". He is fighting for DISNEY animation... and that is different from fighting for animation as a whole.

Having said that, I still hope that Roy can oust Eisner and restore Disney as a leader in animation. But I am not going to sit around waiting for the outcome.

Good luck Roy. Let me know if you need my help, otherwise I have my own battles to fight.

A mutha fukan MEn!!!...thats what I love to hear!...

but see in addition, this is the brig "thing"...to me.., its about over estimating the importance of this Roy Disney speech thing, for a community looking for work. maybe nobody is lookin at it that way, maybe everyone just wants a "Disney" running Disney, and since everyone hates Eisner they're up in arms about it all, throwin out words like "traditions" and "values" when I really don't know what the fuk that means in regards to any corporation, let alone Disney...lets be real and not forget the last five years of AN, and how most of y'all feel.

and don't get me wrong, I'm not pissed or fired up. this is really turning interesting, the whole ritual of it all. I like just being truthful, thats all.

and Im not lookin for any specific thing and Im NOT lookin at it like a conspiracy, I just don't get why we should even care....

so Roy can reclaim the name of Disney? Well guess what Roy? your name to us right now tends to make people sick, piss people off...hello? animation nation? the big fuk you corporate sponsor ship, stop fukin with the local talent cuz we're the ones that helped you build your empire, website. Go ahead Roy, unless you tell us why we should care about your agenda, have your bottom line-monkey boy driven "Name" cuz they haven't been doin right by my people for a long time.

Do I stand alone?

There's an old saying that goes like this:

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Roy's message from the party:

Be true to yourself and speak the truth. Do what you do well, do it best and do it with love. Never give up and never surrender.

I'm with Roy all the way. I choose to stand with Mr. Disney and back his efforts to secure the legacy and the destiny of the company that bears his father's name and the name of his Uncle Walt. I take that stand regardless of what he might do for me personally. I take it because it's the morally correct thing to do. It's my way of thanking his family for Peter Pan and Pinochio and all the other great works that have come from his studio that made my childhood special, and for continuing to make life enchanting for people the world over with films that still influence generations.

That's why I pass along a big Right On! to him and why I've committed the web site to helping him in his efforts to get the word out. It's the least I can do to help a brutha.

The enemy of our enemy is a friend.

Dang it! That last speech was like John Belushi's in 'Animal House'.

This thread is turning into the best blog on the web after Paris Hilton's.

I respect it Charles. If you feel he needs the support fine. But I won't sit here and watch you and AN stick your necks out without an acknowledgement from Disney or Eisner.

Let em' come here and speak their piece.

Snakebite, you're too cool. Like Johnny Storm from the 'Fantastic Four'... ( just don't be Roy Disney in disguise...) [Smile]
