RE: California Fire Foundation established to aid fallen New York and DC
firefighters and their familes
Date: September 12, 2001
____________________________________________________________________________
For those of us in the fire service, this week's sinister attacks on New
York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington carried a special
stab of agony. As all of us watched the unimaginably horrific sight of the
World Trade Center towers crumbling into rubble, we knew it meant that
hundreds of our brothers and sisters with the Fire Department of New York
had lost their lives.
The tales of heroism and selflessness shown by these men and women are
almost too numerous to mention. Survivors told of firefighters bursting
through doors to find survivors. Climbing the torturous stairways even as
the building's occupants tried to flee. Handing over their own breathing
apparatus to anyone who needed an extra gasp of oxygen. Every one of these
men and women were in those buildings in pursuit of one objective: to save
lives.
Here at CPF, we've been inundated with phone calls from our members, as well
as the public, asking how they can help the families of our fallen
colleagues. For California firefighters, there is already a vehicle for
extending this helping hand through the California Fire Foundation.
During this extraordinary time, we are making the Foundation available to
our members, as well as the public, to serve as a vehicle through which all
donations can be bundled and directed to firefighters and their families in
New York and D.C.
If you know of someone who would like to donate, they can do so through:
