The animation community is welcome to celebrate Animation Day on April 1, 2008 in Burbank, California. This is the 10th year in a row of a tradition which started in 1999. Animation Day is a social gathering celebrating fraternal goodwill between professionals in the animation industry.
Everyone is welcome. The event is sponsored by The Animation Academy and AnimationNation.com. There'll be plenty of pizza and people, including a celebration of AWN's 12th anniversary.
Animation Day will be held at the Burbank Association of Realtors Hall located at 2006 W. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank, 91506 on Tuesday evening, April 1st from 7:30 to 10:00 pm. Doors open at 7:00. Free parking. A $5 donation is requested to help pay for food. Celebrate unity, camaraderie and the creative spirit that makes the animation industry unique in the field of entertainment. Looking forward to seeing you there!

It's 4.1 in the Rocky Mountains just about now, and Europe, Africa and Asia are well into Animation Day. Australia too I think.

A huge thank you going out to all the ANers and to everyone who attended the Animation Day celebration we had last night in Burbank. I'll be following with a wrap up of the evening soon, with some photos I took.
Last night's event set a new standard. Thanks again to all for a very memorable community experience!

I had a great time and I was surprised to see the high quality of the artwork the students brought to the mix. It was very nice to be able to show the first images from "The missing lynx" too, even if my speach was longwinded and I felt I could have talked for another hour. Kudos to all who made it and to Charles for his dedication to the cause.

this meeting was amaZing. everything I thought April 1rst should be...and I don't care what people think, it should be called Animation Nation meeting and not animation day.since it started as AN it should stay AN.
the only reason it changed was to appease the negative people who don't even show up anyway so FTG.
This meeting was filled with the new generation of artists in the biz and I'll tell you what, they aren't half as negative as the generation before and they certainly are not threatened by the passion of people like Charles and myself. they actually appreciate that since they get we're fighting for their future.
it would of been nice to see the veterans of this board there to show the new generation that the old one isn't filled with a bunch of threatened pussies but oh well...it worked out much better.
Everyone was hanging out and drawing, we had one cat who set up a table and was pimping his work and sharing his indie production with people.next year I bet there will be more tables with this sort of presentation.
everyone was sharing their ideas and experience. it was truly remarkable. this is the spirit of AN. you can bitch and moan but it has to be followed up with solutions and creations.
this was the first year that everyone agreed that creating was the solution. this was the first year that they showed us they agreed by displaying their creations.
this was the first year I am actually excited for the future of animation.
KEEP CREATING!!!!

Steve Worth (bigshot) was there, among others. He represented ASIFA-Hollywood and the Animation Archive. Here he is in the distance at the podium towards the left addressing the crowd. Look at the turnout we had.
There were 85 individuals who signed in. Including the ones who didn't sign in, were passing through to see what it was about, etc, we figure there were around 100 people total, maybe even more.
We went through 20 extra large pizzas, many of them with the works. Everybody ate as much as they wanted. Nobody went away hungry. Jasen would've been right at home at this pizza party.

Three ANers whose presence helped make it a special event.
To the left is Andrew Harlow, Droosan on the forums. One of AN's most stalwart supporters. In the center is Raul Garcia (raymundio), who's producing an independent animated featrure. On the right is bigshot Steve Worth from ASIFA Hollywood and the Animation Archive.
There was a really good spirit at the event. In fact there were several if you believe in spirit orbs that appear in photos. Check out how many were floating around these guys. The one just to the right of Steve's head is the brightest one.

I was going to post these shots in a seperate thread but I think I'll stick with this one.
This is Bryon Carson, Otterslide on the forums, of Otterslide Studio. www.otterslide.com A long time member of AN and a regular at our 4.1 events. He's got his AN t-shirt on, as you'll notice. Great seeing him again. He was one of the early arrivals.

The first speaker of the evening was Steve Worth, which was only fitting. Steve was the first to show up at AN#1 on April 1, 1999. I was really happy to see him at this latest incarnation of the 4.1 event. Sorry about the blurred quality of the photo. I was doing a lot of running around and didn't get a good picture of Steve while he was at the podium, but you get an idea of what was happening at the time.

Raul Garcia addressing the audience. He was very generous in his description and inspiring in his explanation of how he was managing the international production of an independent animated feature film.
Afterwards, Raul treated everyone to a peak at his upcoming movie.

The guest of honor, Dan Sarto, co-founder of AWN.com. Dan frequently spends April 1 with us, which is a very special day for him as well. April 1, 1996 was the day when AWN.com Animation World Network was launched. We celebrated AWN's 12th anniversary.

This shot will give you an idea of how everything fell into place from the beginning. Even kids brought portfolios to share and to work on. The tables were a sea of creativity as the evening progressed, really setting apart this 4.1 from all the others we had before.

There's quite a few photos left to post. I'm going to pace this and follow up with them over the next couple of days.

A review posted April 5 at DrawingBoard.org by someone who attended the event. He was a student of mine when I first started teaching at Cal State Northridge.
...................
On Tuesday night I had the absolute joy of hanging out with my former teacher Charles (of Animation Nation fame or infamy depending on who you ask), for Animation Day.
Animation Day is an anual event that Charles and his school put on every April fools day in order to celebrate art, the medium of animation, and to critique the industry. It was absolutely one of the most inspiring events I have been to in a long time. Seeing so many students working on their craft, and mingling was a sight to behold. As a student who is sometimes upset with the things he see's in the industry, I am happy to see that there are many people who are activaly trying to make the animation community a better place.
A post about it on Animation Nation. If you look carefully at that wide shot of the room you can see me hanging out in a blue jacket (hint I'm the suddenly darker value in the image ) http://www.animationnation.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=013021
The official site. http://animationday.blogspot.com/
Eventually, as I understand it there will be a video.
Anyway just thought I'd share that.
