OPENING WEEKEND > $ 3,500,000.
FINAL DOMESTIC TOTAL > $ $ 17,000,000.

As much as I would like it to work, I just have a feeling about this one.

By the way, his opening song on saturdays SNL beginning, just didn't work. I was waiting for it to kick in, but it never did.

I'd have to agree.

I'll be surprised if this one stays in theaters longer than three weeks.

I'm not a big Adam Sandler fan but you gotta give it up for him at least trying something like this.

I think we're underestimating Sandler. I thought "Mr. Deeds" would bomb but it made 125 million in the US. A lot of people still like this guy and pay to see his movies.

Im predicting something in the 20 million range. It's a teen/adult audience comedy, there's really not going to be anything else like it out there in theaters.

Plus i think they're doing a good job promoting this thing. I've been seeing spots all the time on TV.

I think Treasure Planet will be the one to bomb. Is it me or is there absolutely NO HYPE around this movie?? Is Disney even promoting it? I haven't seen much of it on TV or anywhere.

I think some parents will take their kids to see TP over this film..After they all seen Harry Potter First!!!
So I saw 10 million for the weekend..and it will die a slow death..So about 40 million in total!

Yeah I noticed that too. I'm seeing the 8 Crazy Night ads and trailors all over the place! They look pretty darn funny too although my sense of humour has a very wide
range.
However, I don't see much of Treasure Planet in the way of advertising. What I do see doesn't really tell you much about the movie. I know what its about personally, and I'm not really "feeling" the idea but thats me. They still could sell it better though cause I'm sure a lot of other people would be into it

I haven't seen many ads for 8 Crazy Nights here in Michigan, unfortunately.

I've seen a few ads for Treasure Planet, and sticking with my earlier statements here at AN... that Jim Hawkins character is NASTY. When my brother and I saw the trailer for it on TV we both burst out laughing when we saw the shot of him with the bent nose. He looks different in every shot. I think he is completely missing his nose in one shot...maybe the artists were watching a little Alexeieff at the time!

That character and all the 3D money shots are a major turn off. I also don't like the escapist-ness of it. I'm not going to see this one.

OK, now, back to being positive again...

Well, would it surprise anyone if Disney purposely blows the promotion on Treasure Planet, thereby driving it and what's left of the feature animation unit completely into the ground?

Like they don't want that to happen. Sheesh.

Eight Crazy Nights will probably open with $10 million and end up with about $45 million.

Treasure Planet, $20 million opening weekend with a final tally of about $100 million.

On one hand, the last PG-13 animated feature based on a stand up comedian's act was Bebe's Kids, which flopped. On the other hand, there is a frightening amount of people who will see any Adam Sandler film no matter what. Even Little Nicky had a $16 million opening--8 Crazy Nights will do at least that. And given that it's a five day weekend: $32.1 million
Total: $91 million

15 mill opening
85 mill gross

Which by the way would make it's money back.

Opening: $7 Mil
Total gross: $25 Mil

Like TP, it's opening against stiff competition for its teen market segment, including the new James Bond flick, and it suffers from a surfeit of advertising.

Opening: $30 million at least.
Total: $60 million.

This is not intended for kids so it's not even competing for the same audience as Treasure Planet.

"8 Crazy" will be the weekend's teen/date movie. Something tells me they'll choose it over "Extreme Ops."

Adam Sandler comedies almost always do huge numbers. Plus, people are curious to see him animated.

Strange thing is, though, I've seen lots of ads for "Eight Crazy Nights" while watching the Kids' WB lineup. If they're trying to go for Adam Sandler's teen-college grad audience why are they advertising on Saturday Morning?

I also see a lot of ads on Prime Time during adult-oriented programs. And now they're spoofing "8 Mile" with the ads, obviously targeting the teen/young adult demographic.

I guess they're just pushing it on everyone. Kids will want to see anything animated, so why not hit them too?

Hey Godzuki, TP isn't geared towards children either. The 'space-boarding' sequence at the beginning is a dead give away. Disney is trying to snag the teen market...again!

I'm an Adam Sandler fan and an animation fan, but I can't fathom myself being a fan of Adam Sandler in animation. We're not exactly mixing peanut butter and chocolate here!

Opening weekend >1 mil
Final gross >5 mil

Yeah, a sure fire way to get teens into theaters is with a movie based on literature. Too much like school. Do you know any teens psyched to see TP? It'll do about as well as "Titan A.E." for that market.

I'll be optimistic and guess $2.2 mil with a $7 mil gross. They won't make back their ad budget (which is probably bigger than the production budget) never mind a profit. I think after Mr. Deeds people are sick of Sandler. He needs a rest. It might rent well though.

"I think after Mr. Deeds people are sick of Sandler. He needs a rest. It might rent well though."

You'd be surprised. Never underestimate "the Adam Sandler fan". My friend is a big Sandler fan but when we went to see Mr.Deeds I sharply recall him not being very impressed with it. However, monthes later I ask him if he's going to see Sandler's new movie 8 Crazy Nights and he's like,"Oh definitely! I can't wait!"
I mentioned something about the animation and he was like, "Its animated?(actually he said "Its a cartoon?"...sigh)
All he knew was that it was an Adam Sandler movie and he was all about it!
Then I reminded him of how he didn't really like Mr.Deeds and he denied it, "I loved that movie!"
These fans are fiercely dedicated! Don't get me wrong I enjoy my share of Sandler films. But I draw the line at movies like "Little Nicky". Even sick curiosity couldn't make me go see that. But it still did pretty well at the box office(considering the content). These amazing fans make this comedian a very rich man.

Um...I'm thinking 40 million is decent for what it was. Did you see those previews? I myself would've wagered something more along the lines of Madonna's latest movie(what was it called?), that made less than a million. Or was that just the oepning? Hmmm..not sure.
Either way I think Nicky could've have made a lot lower had it not been for the fans.

40 million is pretty good for such a bad movie but it still only made back half the budget. I think a movie like that would have to double it's budget to make a real profit.

Even "Friday After Next" opened to $14 million with Bond and Harry Potter to compete with. And Sandler has more fans than Ice Cube.

Never liked the guy ( Adam Sandler )... except for Happy Gilmour which I only kinda liked, I didn't want to hear talk of the boy... until Mr Deeds... and then Punch Drunk Love.

I have to admit that Adam Sandler's finally starting to make sens so I'm making a point to seeying 8 Craaaaazzy Nights... and that other one that's coming out with Jack Nicholson... Mr Schmidth or whatever.

As for TP, well there's not enough animated features that make their way to the big screen ( well the one in my home town anyways ) to not go see it.

opening : 0$
final : 8.75$... that can't be right... can it?

Opening Weekend - $12 Million
Overall - $45 Million

I think 8CN is going to be too tough a sell. It's supposed to have Adam Sandler's traditional style of grossout humor, and so parents won't bring their younger kids to this movie ( PG-13 ), yet they advertise on Saturday morning. On the other hand, 8CN still "looks" like a family movie. That is, there's nothing about the artistic style of the town and the characters that looks "adult pitched". The Adam lookalike, that old guy and his sister, they would not look out of place as extras in a Disney film ( while the characters in "South Park:BL&U" look nothing like family cartoon characters ). So the Adam fans may still go, "Nah, that looks like a kiddie movie" and then not go. I haven't heard any critics' commentary about 8CN. The movie just seems invisible in terms of buzz.

The big problem with these holiday-specific theatrical releases is that they have to wait till the holiday comes round again before launching the video promotion. That's why Christmas-focussed films either have HUGE star drawing power, to hedge their bets on recouping early, or they're done hopelessly cheap, again to hedge their bets.
8CN is inbetween, and that could be a fatal mistake.

Then again, like many seasonal films, it could have a long shelf life, and perhaps that's accounted for. It certainly isn't going to do big business this year alone. At best, maybe half of South Park. Thas' my .02 worth.

I don't think they're going after women with "8 Crazy." And I don't think "Solaris" is going to do huge business, either. Women are typically turned off by Sci-fi. Then again, it could be another "Ghost." Solaris is basically an arthouse film with an A list star and director/producers. Women mostly want to see fairy tales where some dopey chick bags some rich dude. Either that, or some flick about arm wrestling or NASCAR racing. Either one.

I haven't seen the film yet but I've read plot synopses. Does anyone else think the 8CN plot bears a coincidental resemblence to the plot of "Lilo and Stitch"?

In "Lilo and Stitch" a hostile and combative alien in trouble with the law meets a very weird little girl who helps reform him.

In "Eight Crazy Nights" a hostile and combative hoodlum in trouble with the law meets a very weird little guy who helps reform him.
